my future academics
For what I have obtained knowledge of while being in college. I have learned to be very useful in my future educational years or any academic career I end up at. And will be helpful to all future papers I will do. Also, the books that we use in my English class are different material than I’m used to but very useful and helpful in a different way and gives a good point of view. I have gained a lot of knowledge with these books so far already by reading them. Along with learning how APA style works and how it is used because I come from a high school that didn’t teach this style at all or any style for that matter in any class I took while there. Later down the road I saw myself going into the research path from my major communication sciences and disorders, I would want to go far in depth of the research of how hearing loss can happen. And what possible age groups and who is it more likely to happen to and is there any possible signs or anything you are born with that could possibly lead you later to hearing loss. And that is something of great interest of what could be the possible cause and is there anything that could prevent hearing loss from happening. I feel like the one thing I lack when it comes to research is focus because if it isn’t a topic of interest for me, I won’t have good focus on the research and will most likely not bring important facts about it because I won’t read that in depth on the subject. Depending on what I’m researching I will show my research to back up my ideas but also prove my facts about what I’m talking about.

Dear Sarah
Something we both have in common is that we both never learned the APA style format before coming into college. It was definitely something new for me and I am still trying to improve in many aspects of formatting and writing. The books we are reading have been greatly utilized throughout this journey. It is incredible that in your research about your major you got intrigued by the causes of hearing loss. It is important to be interested in a subject in order to focus on research.
I am the same way, at least when I am for sure not interested in a certain subject. It is difficult for me to focus or to give my all on research. I focus on what I am intrigued by. Being interested is already a major factor to start a research and to obtain proper focus. The more you are interested, the more you read. The more you read, the more data you collect. Now you are able to find more information that may back up your ideas.
I try to find the positive side of doing research on topics that I am not interested in, just cause I know it will help me with the future, when I have to do different types of writing. I can become more professional the more I practice. I really hope that you continue to learn more about your career path throughout your journey at Longwood. And even though we are still learning and growing, Longwood has many resources that we can utilize in our advantage. Reaching out to our professors is a need because they care about our success. I hope that the writing center can help you when you are in need. Also never doubt in your hard work.
Sincerely,
Arleth Gomez
Hello Sarah! I agree with you in that our English class has been very helpful by teaching us how to use correct APA formatting and giving us more experience on how to write up proper research papers. We both went to the same high school, so I understand what you mean by not getting taught how to do proper styles for papers. I did maybe a good 5 papers throughout my high school years and honestly, I can’t say I recall much from it. I have heard that we will be writing plenty of research papers throughout our years here in college so even though I seem to struggle right now, this class is going to be very helpful for you and for I in the future. I enjoy reading the comic despite having to do work on it, I wish we could’ve done comics in high school too rather than the typical, boring, long, and no pictures involved books. I think it is awesome that you want to do such a deep research on what leads to hearing loss, what age groups are affected most or who is more affected by them, and what the signs of it is. Personally, I’m not the most interested on doing research on anything related to my future job, other than figuring out the best ways to communicate and bond with my students since it is one of the main reasons I’m going into education. I agree that focus plays a big role in writing research papers, I think it is common knowledge that if you’re interested in something then you are more likely to enjoy the paper and do better on it rather than if you were writing about something that does not catch your attention. I am glad to know that you are finally getting the right help with how to write research papers.
