Blog Post #10

Overall, I feel as if I have grown tremendously throughout this semester. I started out unsure with my writing abilities and how I perceived my writing to be, however, I have grown extremely confident with myself and turning in assignments. I have always felt a lack of interest in what I write but I have learned that enjoying writing quite literally determines how well you will do. When writing, I always imagine myself to be more professional because I believe it is what the professors are looking for, although after some heavy feedback I realized that professors want to hear your own voice and not what you think they want to hear. I started out as a non-English major but I have become more inclined to write with the structures and lessons I have learned in my writing courses. Moving forward, I will apply my confidence to all writing assignments. My future self will learn from the grades I have received this semester and apply what I might have done good and fix what I might have done wrong. Learning about the different disciplines in writing will really help me when I get into classes that have those different modes. The separate writing styles will come through throughout all of college and the classes I might take will seem easier as I have the writing inclination. I plan on being a professor and these different disciplines find themselves apparent in all classes and things similar. There is a lot of schooling tied to becoming a professor, so these disciplines will assist in the classes I have to take in the future. I trust that referencing will be apparent in all classes so it is a tremendous help to learn about them as soon as possible so I am not stuck in the future, which is what this class has helped out with. Language is another important note to have when it comes to writing, I hope that I have accumulated a ton of different language points that will amplify my writing in the future. I am really appreciative of what I have learned this semester and thankful for the confidence boost I have gained.

  1. Dear Abby,

I am glad to read that you feel as though you have grown so much over this semester. It is very good that you have become more confident with yourself and your ability to turn in completed assignments. Like you, I also came in a little worried that I would not have the writing abilities I need to write at the college level. I was not too sure that my high school writing experience would translate over well. I have also grown much more confident throughout this semester, and also give some of the credit to my increase in enjoyment while writing.
Learning that professors want to hear your own opinions and voice in your writing has helped me as well as I don’t try so hard to be a robot with perfect writing. I also agree that learning about the different disciplines has helped tremendously in my writing. Learning about the different reference styles has also helped me. I came into college only knowing basic MLA format, but I now am confident using MLA, APA, and CMS.
It is very interesting to hear that you plan on becoming a professor as that is not a commonly chosen path. I am sure that your writing will only continue to improve as you move throughout college and the other schooling required to become a professor. I also think that I have learned a lot about Structure and Language too in this class and believe it will help me tremendously with my academic writing. Being able to combine all parts of SLR will allow me to write a complete paper that answers the topic, is easy to read, and fits into the discipline required.
Best of luck to you as you move on in your journey of becoming a professor. I hope that you will continue to learn and improve in your writing as it is a never ending journey. I enjoyed reading about how you thought you have improved over the semester, and am sure you will reach your goals.

    Best,
    Cullen

  2. I agree with you when you say you felt that you have grown a lot this semester. I also started with my writing skills not being the best they could have been. I also feel that I perceived my writing at a very low standard. I also I found myself being more confident through all the assignments we have done throughout the semester. I feel that the more I lack in my interest of what I am writing the less I want to actually do the work. I am on the other side and don’t feel that was very professional when I started college but I feel I have gained a lot more professionalism. I think your mindset has a big impact on how we approach on our assignment. When trying to sound like someone who your not, it is hard for me to find who I really am and to find my voice. I liked how you talked about how professors like to hear their students voices in their writing. You seem to have a lot of self awareness when you are writing.
