Over the course of this semester, I’ve grown more as a writer than I expected. When the class first began, I thought of writing as one general skill. You either wrote well, or you didn’t. But this class showed me that writing is made up of many smaller skills like organizing ideas, choosing the right tone, integrating sources smoothly, and revising with purpose. Realizing that each part can be improved on its own has helped me become a more confident writer.

One of the biggest areas of growth for me has been structure. Earlier in the semester, I feel my paragraphs tended to wander or include multiple ideas at once. Now I’m much more aware of clear topic sentences, logical flow, and transitions that help guide the reader. I outline more often, and that alone has made my drafts stronger and easier to revise. I also feel more in control of my tone. I can shift between reflective writing, academic writing, and more professional writing depending on the assignment. This flexibility has boosted my confidence because I no longer feel stuck in one style.

Another major improvement is my comfort with using sources. Before this class, citations felt stressful, and I wasn’t always sure how to integrate evidence smoothly. Now I understand how to introduce sources, explain them, and connect them back to my main point. This is especially important for me since my field relies heavily on research based writing.

Learning that each academic discipline has its own expectations for structure, language, and reference has also been eye opening. It helps me understand why some assignments feel different from others and why professors emphasize different things. Moving forward in college, this awareness will help me adjust my writing depending on the field. Instead of approaching every assignment the same way, I now look at the discipline, the audience, and the purpose before I start writing.

These skills will follow me into my future career as well. Since I plan to work in psychology and help children with mental health challenges, clear communication will be essential. I’ll need to write case notes, reports, and explanations for parents, teachers, and other professionals. Being able to shift tone, write clearly, and organize information logically will directly impact how well others can understand and act on what I write.

Extra Credit Blog Post: Your First Semester at Longwood

This semester has been full of ups and downs. When I moved in, I was anxious but also excited to start this new chapter in my life. A lot of my anxiety vanished once I realized everyone else was in the same boat. The first week was very easy considering it was just orientation and boring presentations. When classes started, I was able to make lots of new friends. On the other hand, things got very chaotic with the start of classes, and my free time started to decrease which I was not a fan of that. There were weekends where I was in the library all day because I had so much work to do. My hardest class is anatomy and physiology because it contains so much material for each test I set aside social activities outside of schoolwork. Besides schoolwork, throughout the first few weeks my roommates and I clicked instantly. We have had slight disagreements within the semester, but I feel like that is a normal thing when you live in close quarters with others. I think next year we are still planning on living together because we all get along pretty well. Along with all the good things come bad things as well. In the middle of the semester I got overwhelmed with all my schoolwork and I started falling behind. Some of my grades started slipping and I had no social life. Thankfully my roommates helped me at a low time. I know when I need help, I can ask them especially when my new classes start next semester. Another thing that has helped me through this semester is going to the gym consistently. The gym has been a great outlet, and I plan on carrying this habit into next semester. For the spring semester I plan on planning out my week before it starts to help with time management.

Blog post #10 What have I learned?

Even though writing was something I never enjoyed doing in class I am very grateful that most of my assignments were about writing because It prepared me for what I am expected to know and do for the rest of my life. I was never good at writing but I think since starting college and having some tools provided such as books and school resources that talked about what makes someone a good writer, it helped me see writing in a different way and I think I have improved in some way. There is a lot to work on in my writing but I think I am more confident moving forward with these new skills for my major where I will have plenty of lab reports that I will be doing and one of the required skills is scientific writing. I no longer see writing as a frustration subject but rather a challenge that I can overcome if I propose myself to it. I think it’s just a matter of time, commitment and patience to become better writer

Knowing differences in things like structure, language, and reference, is essential in order for a reader to understand what they are reading, the order the writer takes from the beginning to the end, the language it is written whether is formal or informal. And what references are included that can support all of the points the writer makes.  I think knowing these modes of writing will help me improve when I want to target. a specific reader and want to keep them entertained while they are also able to dive into more information to gain more knowledge about a topic. The books helped me a lot to understand why writing is not something that can be done in one day, it takes time to revise and correct any errors.

Throughout this semester I have been able to practice my writing skills through doing research papers. As I wrote my annotated bibliography and my SFD I improved my use of APA format. I have never used APA format before coming to this class, so having the opportunity to write two papers with that format has helped me learn a lot. Another thing I improved on throughout the semester is staying topic of each of my paragraphs. In the beginning of this class I had trouble with rambling about a topic which made my writing hard to understand. One big struggle I had when writing the papers was doing citations. After lots of practice and many trips to the writing center, I have improved my ability to make a correct citation. In this class we have done readings about SLR. I have learned how to identity each type of writing based on the format and the information within the writing. I was able to incorporate SLR in my papers used the applied science field. My papers are both share the topic of nursing. which happens to fall into the applied fields. In my papers I followed the format of IMRaD in my papers. Understanding SLR throughout college will help me better understand certain research papers for my classes and also help me set up the format for my papers when writing for a certain field. Having the ability to identify SLR in writings will help me better understand the paper and the reasoning for the format of each writing in my future career. I have learned a lot in this class, and I feel far more confident in my writing compared to when the semester started. I plan on using the skills I have learned from and incorporating them into each of my writings moving forward.

This semester I have grown so much as a writer I think. At first just starting to write a sentence was hard for me, but now once I have an idea I can write pages consecutively without needing a break. My confidence in my writing has grown tremendously, especially when it comes to formatting of a paper. Moving forward in my next writing classes or even other classes that may have writing, I’ll be able to use my new formatting skills to integrate sources and make my writing easier for my reader to understand what I’m trying to say. Although I used some formatting in high school, we mostly used MLA formatting. So getting to college and having to learn APA was a big adjustment for myself being so used to something else. Learning about different writing disciples this semester has really been able to help me understand the context of any text I’m reading more efficiently. Just by looking at formatting and structure I am starting to be able to tell what type of writing it may be. Whether it’s humanities or even natural sciences. I will be able to use the skills I’ve learned this semester throughout my whole time here at Longwood and even after that in my career. I believe this is a perfect class for freshmen coming into college writing. College writing has been so much different then in high school and without this class I wouldn’t even know where to start. Before Writing and Rhetoric I didn’t even know about APA formatting which is crazy because that is what is used in my career. Without this I wouldn’t be prepared for future classes or even writing reports in the hospital. I’m grateful to have learned so much over the course of such a short time frame, I have grown so much as a writer but also as a person.

Looking back on this past semester, I feel that I have noticed a lot of growth in myself as a writer. Beforehand, I only really focused on completing the assignments rather than actually taking the time to think about my work and writing. Ever since I have begun this course, I have started to see myself become a lot more aware of how my writing has changed. One thing I have realized in my writing is that I need to change it according to the audience I am writing to and the message I am trying to portray. This has been beneficial to me. Knowing this now has helped me to become a more confident writer because I understand the purpose of certain writing styles and structures.

One area I also have grown in is the ability to organize my ideas efficiently. At the start of this semester, my writing lacked a lot of solid transitions between paragraphs. Even though it is still not perfect, I feel like I have still grown a lot the past few months. Now, I feel a lot more confident in being able to outline the plans for my paper and ensuring every paragraph has a purpose. Overall, this has helped my writing to feel more focused on the topic and easier to comprehend. I also feel a lot more comfortable with revising my writing. I understand now that rewriting is a big part of the process when writing and it often can help to enhance the overall depth and understanding of my writing.

Lastly, one thing I have learned and found important is my understanding that each specific field and discipline has a specific kind of writing. Again, when I first started this course, my writing was honestly the same no matter the subject or the audience. Now, I understand that each academic field requires specific things, such as structure, evidence, and references. A very good example of using this knowledge in other classes would be when I was asked to write a research paper for my criminal justice class. Having spoken about this in class, I was confidently able to write a paper in APA with a title page and a specific references page with the required citations. Being able to understand these differences has helped me feel more prepared when I am asked to write in other college classes.

For my zine project, I decided to create mine about all of Taylor Swift’s eras. Each era of her career has a unique sound, style, and story, and I want my zine to capture the creativity, reinvention, and personal growth that have made her one of the most influential artists of our time. The cover of my zine is inspired by the official Eras Tour poster, which I think perfectly represents the idea of reflecting on Taylor’s many musical identities. However, I made it my own by including her newest album, The Life of a Showgirl. The title, A Journey Through Taylor Swift’s Eras, sits at the bottom of the cover, with the word eras written in the same font used in the Eras Tour promo. I wanted other fans to be able to not just see a stylistic choice, but rather another nod to the tour. Since I already know so much about Taylor Swift, I don’t think I’ll need to do much outside research. However, I might include a few quotes from interviews or articles that discuss how she’s grown as an artist over time, just to give my zine more depth. Most of my content will come from my own knowledge and appreciation of her. When I started creating my cover, I first sketched out a rough layout to figure out where each “era” image would go. As you can see, I put the color that each box will end up being. Making this cover was actually really fun and helped me get inspired for the rest of the zine. It reminded me how much I love Taylor Swift’s ability to tell stories through her music and image, and it made me even more excited to start working on the inside pages.

The topic for my Zine is about Peanut Butter Blossoms (the cookies). These cookies are one of my favorites to make and, of course, to eat. So I just had to look up a recipe and, of course, a little background information to gather all the necessary information that I wanted to include in my Zine. I am not the most artistic, as you can see in this rough draft, as the thing at the bottom is supposed to be chocolate… Yeah, it will be better for the final draft. But I also feel like it is missing something and need to figure out what it is missing. Once I correct the look of everything and figure out what it is missing I feel I will be in a better position.

For my Zine, I have decided to do an informational zine about the Duke Men’s Basketball program. When thinking about what I am passionate about and things that contain information, this was a good topic that came to my mind. I knew I would be able to find lots of information on this topic, and would also have fun presenting it and constructing my zine. The cover of my zine will be pretty simple and include my name, one of the many Duke Basketball logos, and a picture of one of the past Duke rosters.

I already knew quite a bit about this topic, as I have always been a Duke fan growing up. A lot of the stats and notable players I already had memorized, so I decided to use those in my zine, as I had a lot of knowledge on it. I also included some new research about how many contributions Duke has made to the NBA and how many of those were 1st round picks. Along with this, I did a deeper dive into Duke’s previous coach, Coach K. I included his record and a short background about how he got to be as successful as he was.

To create my cover, I used Canva as I am not the greatest artist. One of the sample zines I read in class used printed-out words and pictures, and I thought it was much easier to read and gain information from. It also looked cleaner and more organized. This inspired me to do the same, and I used pictures from various sources across the internet to comprise my zine. I am excited to continue working on my zine as this is a topic I enjoy, and this assignment has felt like a nice break in all the hard writing and papers that have consumed me the past few weeks.

Best of luck to everyone on their Zines,

Cullen
