April 2022 - Write-It

I really liked this zine because I feel that it relates to what we have been talking about in class, the Civil Rights Movement. It consists of pictures and information of colored Americans who lost their lives because of racism that is still in the world today. It was produced digitally and organized with names in alphabetical order. It is a zine full of color and detail. Each page has a drawn picture of the victim with an ombre background. The creator of the zine was able to voice their opinions and emotions through this zine and show that the people in it were good people, with a lot of life still left to live. This piece of artwork is a zine because it is really obvious the passion the creator had for the topic. While some zines are very scattered and collaged, the author of this one wanted to keep each page with the same organizational method, allowing for the information to be clearly understood.

I believe the author made it digitally. I am not sure if the sketches of the people were drawn by the creator or not, but each page has almost a comic book look. It is easy to tell it was created digitally by the font and colors added around the pictures. I really like how all pages are created in the same format and how the author made the names listed in the book in alphabetical order. I find this very artistically unique.

I am going to be making a zine on barrel racing. Barrel racing is something I am very passionate about and know I will be able to educate others on it. Though I have had horses all my life, I began barrel racing almost 3 years ago and have not stopped since. I wish to include information about each of my horses and educate the reader on what barrel racing is, how it works, and the equipment needed.

Gratitude Zine

I chose a zine by Austin Kleon titled “ My Gratitude Zine”. Kleon got a powerful message through in a couple pages using his artwork to either format an exercise or to show the meaning of what he’s trying to say. I think he made it most likely by hand. By simply writing out his thoughts on paper and designing it as he goes. I like that style a lot within the zines that I have seen, the simple but powerful ones. He shows a couple of exercises to help him cultivate gratitude. He starts by explaining that one can both have everything and feel nothing as well as being alive but also feeling dead. “Being alive but feeling dead” is a phrase that I have heard more than I want to but honestly is true with some people. Walking around looking like themselves but beneath the surface is a losing battle. He then creates a list of everything he is grateful for to remind himself of what he can be happy about in life. I believe he thanks other people to remind himself that he is not alone in the world, that he has people willing to help and teach him. Naming activities that you can honestly say you enjoy doing can show you what you haven’t fully realized. What you find out you enjoy doing now can potentially show you how you will spend the rest of your life. If you can’t name anything that you like to do, how will you enjoy anything later on in your life? Gratitude and optimism can be hard to reach but fulfilling once achieved. It is very hard to pull yourself out of a negative cycle, so take a step back, breath and focus on what you want to do with your life and how you can be happy doing it.

NBA Decades Zine

Zine_2000-decade_JT_final_flat_leftpage.jpg

After looking at some zines on google, the one I found that piqued my interest the most was one called, “Decades: Basketball’s Past, Present, and Future”. It does not look like the full zine is there, but it interested me from what I was able to look at. It was basically a collage of very nicely drawn basketball players who were the most significant during the 2000s era of basketball in the NBA. There were no words on the pages that I was able to see, but the art alone was what stood out to me. Art is something that never fails to fascinate me. I think part of that is because my “art” attempts are abysmal.

Along the side of the website, it has some background information saying that it was a group effort that came from the best hoops artists out there. With that being said, I think this zine was made online. It looks like it could have been drawn by hand, but if it was a group of artists, I feel like it has to have been made online. The only thing the zine is missing is words, but I think the detailed pictures make up for it. I choose this zine because I am really big into basketball. I knew all of these players and I understand how significant they were to the game of basketball. Basketball has been a passion of mine since I was 8 years old. I wish I could have seen the full thing, but I am sure that is something I would have had to purchase.

I plan on doing my zine on how to prepare for and run a 5k. Running is another one of my passions, and it was something I did competitively in high school. Even though I have experience in running 5ks, I feel like there is still information for me to learn, so doing a zine on this topic will allow me to share my prior knowledge and research at the same time.

zine

Before starting my zine, I wanted to find a good example that I could use to help me when creating my own zine. I tried to find a zine that was somewhat similar to what I am trying to do when creating my own. I have looked and looked for a zine that has a good structure and that I can mimic with my own. I used a couple that were medical and science related to help get ideas from them so I can use things that I saw that I can make my own and recreate pretraining to mine. I want to do a zine about the sciences behind whitetail deer and how to hunt them, and just everything about them. My zine is very different from a lot of the ones that I’ve seen online, and I want mine to be balanced and have it as informative and visually appealing as I can get it. So for some of the zine’s I’ve seen, I tried to find medical zine’s which show and talk about anatomy which is one of my topics in my zine, so I found a couple and it helps to see those as a reference. I also wanted to find zine’s that had something to do with other wild life and use that as well. My zine is going to be a lot different from the ones that I’ve seen, but I am going to try and make it as well endowed as possible for all those who read it. So my goal like I said is to make it as informative as possible so that if people who read it, especially the ones who don’t know anything about deer or hunting, can have a general since of what the animal is about and what the sport is about.

Creative Zines

I chose the zine titles, “Like the Tide”, by Isabella Rotman. This zine stuck out to me with the striking cover, that was yet subtle enough to be looked over, if one was not paying attention to the different covers inside the gallery. This zine is classified as a zine, because the author is passionate about the ocean and exemplifies their love in a short story.

I think the author made this zine was created using some sketching , with an app like ,”Procreate”, then digitally edited online with an online software , to enhance the colors and images used. The words are obviously typed , and not hand written, for the most part , but the authors uses some hand-drawn words , when describing actions. The author enhances the detail of hand-drawing , with the woman “gasps” for air when coming up for air.

I think this is a pretty awesome zine, this proves that zines do not take much effort to be creative. All that is required for a zine is the dedication , or love for anything. This author chose on of my personal “safe spaces”, the water. I love being near the water , just laying beside the water , or swimming , makes me feel like I am connected to every wave, or motion.

My zine will be on the battles many of us face everyday as college students. Many of us face silent battles hidden beneath a smile. For me , personally , I battle a major case of anxiety , and some days it is hard for me to even remember what my name is. This is heightened when I have to engage in contact with my peers, and I want people who face similar battles, to know they are not alone. We crave things to help us ease the tension , for many of us ,that supplement is nicotine.

Defining A Zine

What Makes it a Zine?

Some attributes that make this piece a Zine would be its’ comic like quality, length, and digital art. The artist clearly used several images to piece together to create a whole page. The art is also very layered almost like a collage or scrapbook. The use of images as substitutions for words really gave it the quality of a zine.

How it Appears to Be Made?

Based on the clarity of all of the images and how well it looks digitally, I would say that this zine is fully digital and created all online. The images are very well edited as if they used Adobe photoshop. The images are also super clear and lack any grain that is usually in a physical print.

General Thoughts

I like how clear the pages were and how there wasn’t too much going on. When looking at a lot of the zines I noticed that many of them were pretty wordy and I felt as though that contrasted from the images and that the images should be used to say more. I also enjoyed how poetic the words were as they really contributed to the polaroid images. I found it interesting how they kept a pretty clear color palette and used flowers on every page.

My Zine

For my zine, our prompt is our passion and as a business major I typically joke and say my passion is money. The topic of my zine will be “How to Marry Rich.” I plan on incorporating lots of pictures and making it a very visual experience as I believe pictures are worth a thousand words. I make each page a step to check off like on a checklist. My goal for my zine is to clearly portray my topic with mostly images and provide a bit of comedic relief as it is a fairly funny topic.

A Star Wars Zine

I found a Zine online that is about Star Wars. It has drawings of different characters and different scenarios involving different characters are inside. There’s a video in which someone is flipping through the book to give you an idea of what is inside.

It’s about the size of the Zines we are going to be making for class. There’s lots of creativity within it, and while it has aspects of a comic, it’s not entirely a comic. It also has pages and pages of art. It’s really a fan-made book about Star Wars characters. I think these make it a Zine.

I think they made a lot of it digitally, especially the art. There may be more than one artist, so I’ll refer to them in the plural sense. The people who created these drawings must’ve done it digitally because the art is too precise and fine for it to be done with pens or painted. Also, it would make more sense since all the pages are clearly ink-printed.

The whole Zine is about Star Wars characters and is thus obviously inspired by the franchise. However, from what I can tell, all the scenarios within the Zine are original, they’re like fanfiction or head cannons about these characters. So, as far as media goes, they used Star Wars and their own imagination.

Zines in general are pretty cool and give people a huge chance to explore. People can make Zines about what they’re passionate about, interested in, or want others to know about. They can make Zines like the one I talked about, making short stories involving their favorite characters. Zines can be a way of sharing part of yourself with other people if that is your goal or desire, and I think that’s cool.

My own Zine is going to be about the only book series I’ve ever been invested in, The Chronicles of Narnia. They are children’s books, but I’ve been interested in the series since I was a child, and it would be great to share what I know about it with others. I think it would especially be great because I think reading is wonderful and sharing what we’ve read is a wonderful thing to do as well.

Here is the link to the Zine I was talking about: https://worldbetweenworldszine.tumblr.com. Scroll down to one of the posts posted on March 4, 2022 to see the pictures and the video.

Zine Selection Example

               link:https://quarantinezineclub.neocities.org/zinelibrary/seankirkpatrick-thedays.pdf

The Zine I chose is named “the days”. It is a Zine about mental illness and things in everyday life that you can romanticize to make your day a little bit better. I love this zine not only because of the creativity and work put into it but because of the more important message that the author put behind making this zine. What makes this a zine is obviously the physical characteristics however zines are a very open ended thing. Zines can be as creative as you want them to be. The most important attribute to making a zine that draws the reader in is making sure that you are passionate on what you are making your zine about. Your involvement and passion will shine through your zine and affect the reader more than the colors you choose on the pages.

The zine I chose in particular seems to be made out of paper and digital editing. I think that most or all of the work for this zine was done online. It has many edited characters and animals throughout the zine. This zine also has text bubbles and a story line of pictures and animations. I love how this author showed expression on all of the animated figures throughout the book it allows for a stronger story to be told. The author also uses a lot of words to portray her opinions on mental health to inform the reader and to make the readers understand that these are everyday problems that most people encounter.

For the zine I will be creating I am going to want to inform and entertain my readers. I will be creating a zine about the steps to get to my dream career. While this will be about me and my life I look to add facts about the different steps I will need to take. I also thing I will be using some online attributes and printing techniques in my zine as well as bright colors.

Creativity of a Zine

An attribute of a Zine is that authors want to share ideas or express themselves in creative ways, not to make money. It is often linked to a specific activity, lifestyle. The Internet has made it easier to share ideas and expand interest circles. Long some time recently the approach of the Web, zines permitted fans to make systems, share thoughts and investigations, and collaborate on composing and craftsmanship. The zine were created in science fiction fandoms of the 1930s, taking the zine name from fanzine. In its most exacting sense, the word zine is brief for “magazine” it is centerin any case, the zine is much more than a few reduced form of another organization. The interesting list of zines by themes are art, science, poetry, sports.

The type of media I have no idea but printing, cutting, and sticking words, outlinesdesigns, and outlines will bring my zine to life. The zine I picked from the website there was all different ones and every single one was very creative and had its own details and design. I will  attempt a blended media approach by printing out a few of the realistic  components in my zine and physically collaging them to make a special format. There are numerous distinctive   reasons to utilize a collapsed format for a zine. On one hand, it disentangles the generation handle, making the record cheaper and simpler to copy or print.  The fold also conveys the format’s beginnings and includes  visual intrigued to my zine piece.

Finally, I am making my zine on my passion for horse back riding and how history is envoled with my passion. I will include stories, all the different equipment, what I do for training wise. I will go over and beyond will decorating and creating my Zine. Blending and coordinating design is one of the foremost fun parts of this plan extend.

Zines

https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.amazingblazezine.com/amazingblazezine/2020/5/1/decades-zine%3fformat=amp

With this Zine there were many things I found very interesting. The first reason on why I liked this zine is because of the front cover. Looking at the front cover of the book gave me such a realistic feeling about sports. Oh really found the abstract colors of the zine very interesting too. I like how they fit different colors based on the theme of the zine. I felt like this really fit the Zine category due to it artistic skill throughout the booklet. Another reason on why I call this a Zine is because of the amount of information in such little words. Next, I liked how this specific sports zine showed the different decades of NBA history. I feel that talking about the different decades of NBA history, could help inspire people in the future that might have the dream of playing in the NBA.
Looking at this zine you can tell it was made with a lot of care and also made mostly electronically. The reason I say that is because looking at the clear detail in the art work made the cover page POP! When looking at this Zine they gave us different social media websites such as Facebook and Twitter. I feel like this was important because the zine gave us different options on how we can find this specific reading online instead of just looking in one place. Overall, I didn’t feel like anything was missing in this reading. Everything was very organized and readable. Lastly, I feel very confident in what I chose because this was non fiction. The reason I chose something non-fictional is because I felt like others and I could understand and relate to this Zine more. Also, I liked how history was involved in this Zine instead of talking about NBA events that’s happening right not. Learning about history 10 years ago and learning about history in the future helps give a bigger picture of the NBA culture and how they operate day to night.
