NBA Decades Zine

After looking at some zines on google, the one I found that piqued my interest the most was one called, “Decades: Basketball’s Past, Present, and Future”. It does not look like the full zine is there, but it interested me from what I was able to look at. It was basically a collage of very nicely drawn basketball players who were the most significant during the 2000s era of basketball in the NBA. There were no words on the pages that I was able to see, but the art alone was what stood out to me. Art is something that never fails to fascinate me. I think part of that is because my “art” attempts are abysmal.

Along the side of the website, it has some background information saying that it was a group effort that came from the best hoops artists out there. With that being said, I think this zine was made online. It looks like it could have been drawn by hand, but if it was a group of artists, I feel like it has to have been made online. The only thing the zine is missing is words, but I think the detailed pictures make up for it. I choose this zine because I am really big into basketball. I knew all of these players and I understand how significant they were to the game of basketball. Basketball has been a passion of mine since I was 8 years old. I wish I could have seen the full thing, but I am sure that is something I would have had to purchase.

I plan on doing my zine on how to prepare for and run a 5k. Running is another one of my passions, and it was something I did competitively in high school. Even though I have experience in running 5ks, I feel like there is still information for me to learn, so doing a zine on this topic will allow me to share my prior knowledge and research at the same time.

  1. Hi Ryan, I really loved the zine you chose. The first thing that stuck out to me is the amazing quality of the artwork used in this zine. It is very artistic and creative. I like how it is snapshots of all the different players highlights artistically spaced throughout the cover. I also like that you not passionate about one thing in this zine. You stated that artwork is fascinating to you. I like that because the cover of a zine is what first strikes the readers attention and not only are you interested and passionate about the information of the zine but the actual artwork is something you are passionate about.
I agree with you that their doesn’t need to be any words on this cover because I believe that the artwork speaks for itself. It is intriguing enough in itself. I also think that words would distract from the overall piece that is is trying to portray. I also agree with you that this was drawn by hand. It shows the work of a truly talented artist.
Lastly, I enjoyed reading about your passions throughout this blog. You talked about you passions for art, basketball, and running. I like that you brought in personal information such as when you played basketball.
I think that reading your zine on training for a 5k will be very fun and interesting while also informative. I look forward to hearing your presentation on this zine.

  2. When looking at your Zine I agree with everything you talked about. It’s crazy how we found the same exact zine. I like how you gave a description of the zine you chose. I felt that we had a lot in common when talking about the creativity and the art that was being used in this zine. I found it interesting on how you pulled out a specific detail about the NBA players that appeared on the cover page. The reason I found that interesting is because of the history of these specific individuals and how they impacted many people’s lives today.
Another thing I found exciting is how you talked about the different strategies the author went through while creating this zine. For you to talk about the different strategies being used I found that interesting because the zine you chose you talked about how the zine was structured with only pictures and no words. I feel that this zine can help people understand true creativity instead of writing something very wordy with little pictures. I felt that creativity was used a lot in this zine because it spoke to viewers with only using pictures.
Next, I liked how you talked about how these different players impacted you growing up. I felt like you related to this zine a lot just like others. It’s very interesting how people can encourage people by not even meeting them half of the time. I felt like your zine helped me understand that one day I could make a big difference on someone’s life by being that support they needed no matter how far or how close they are to you.
Lastly, I want to pick out how you talked about your zine. I feel that it’s good to talk about different forms of preparation because you never know what ideas people would want to know when becoming an athlete overtime. I think that your zine will be perfect as a persuasive zine for athletes due to the confidence you apply throughout your project.
