NBA Decades Zine

Zine_2000-decade_JT_final_flat_leftpage.jpg

After looking at some zines on google, the one I found that piqued my interest the most was one called, “Decades: Basketball’s Past, Present, and Future”. It does not look like the full zine is there, but it interested me from what I was able to look at. It was basically a collage of very nicely drawn basketball players who were the most significant during the 2000s era of basketball in the NBA. There were no words on the pages that I was able to see, but the art alone was what stood out to me. Art is something that never fails to fascinate me. I think part of that is because my “art” attempts are abysmal.

Along the side of the website, it has some background information saying that it was a group effort that came from the best hoops artists out there. With that being said, I think this zine was made online. It looks like it could have been drawn by hand, but if it was a group of artists, I feel like it has to have been made online. The only thing the zine is missing is words, but I think the detailed pictures make up for it. I choose this zine because I am really big into basketball. I knew all of these players and I understand how significant they were to the game of basketball. Basketball has been a passion of mine since I was 8 years old. I wish I could have seen the full thing, but I am sure that is something I would have had to purchase.

I plan on doing my zine on how to prepare for and run a 5k. Running is another one of my passions, and it was something I did competitively in high school. Even though I have experience in running 5ks, I feel like there is still information for me to learn, so doing a zine on this topic will allow me to share my prior knowledge and research at the same time.

Defining A Zine

What Makes it a Zine?

Some attributes that make this piece a Zine would be its’ comic like quality, length, and digital art. The artist clearly used several images to piece together to create a whole page. The art is also very layered almost like a collage or scrapbook. The use of images as substitutions for words really gave it the quality of a zine.

How it Appears to Be Made?

Based on the clarity of all of the images and how well it looks digitally, I would say that this zine is fully digital and created all online. The images are very well edited as if they used Adobe photoshop. The images are also super clear and lack any grain that is usually in a physical print.

General Thoughts

I like how clear the pages were and how there wasn’t too much going on. When looking at a lot of the zines I noticed that many of them were pretty wordy and I felt as though that contrasted from the images and that the images should be used to say more. I also enjoyed how poetic the words were as they really contributed to the polaroid images. I found it interesting how they kept a pretty clear color palette and used flowers on every page.

My Zine

For my zine, our prompt is our passion and as a business major I typically joke and say my passion is money. The topic of my zine will be “How to Marry Rich.” I plan on incorporating lots of pictures and making it a very visual experience as I believe pictures are worth a thousand words. I make each page a step to check off like on a checklist. My goal for my zine is to clearly portray my topic with mostly images and provide a bit of comedic relief as it is a fairly funny topic.

Zine Selection Example

               link:https://quarantinezineclub.neocities.org/zinelibrary/seankirkpatrick-thedays.pdf

The Zine I chose is named “the days”. It is a Zine about mental illness and things in everyday life that you can romanticize to make your day a little bit better. I love this zine not only because of the creativity and work put into it but because of the more important message that the author put behind making this zine. What makes this a zine is obviously the physical characteristics however zines are a very open ended thing. Zines can be as creative as you want them to be. The most important attribute to making a zine that draws the reader in is making sure that you are passionate on what you are making your zine about. Your involvement and passion will shine through your zine and affect the reader more than the colors you choose on the pages.

The zine I chose in particular seems to be made out of paper and digital editing. I think that most or all of the work for this zine was done online. It has many edited characters and animals throughout the zine. This zine also has text bubbles and a story line of pictures and animations. I love how this author showed expression on all of the animated figures throughout the book it allows for a stronger story to be told. The author also uses a lot of words to portray her opinions on mental health to inform the reader and to make the readers understand that these are everyday problems that most people encounter.

For the zine I will be creating I am going to want to inform and entertain my readers. I will be creating a zine about the steps to get to my dream career. While this will be about me and my life I look to add facts about the different steps I will need to take. I also thing I will be using some online attributes and printing techniques in my zine as well as bright colors.
