The Zine I chose is named “the days”. It is a Zine about mental illness and things in everyday life that you can romanticize to make your day a little bit better. I love this zine not only because of the creativity and work put into it but because of the more important message that the author put behind making this zine. What makes this a zine is obviously the physical characteristics however zines are a very open ended thing. Zines can be as creative as you want them to be. The most important attribute to making a zine that draws the reader in is making sure that you are passionate on what you are making your zine about. Your involvement and passion will shine through your zine and affect the reader more than the colors you choose on the pages.

The zine I chose in particular seems to be made out of paper and digital editing. I think that most or all of the work for this zine was done online. It has many edited characters and animals throughout the zine. This zine also has text bubbles and a story line of pictures and animations. I love how this author showed expression on all of the animated figures throughout the book it allows for a stronger story to be told. The author also uses a lot of words to portray her opinions on mental health to inform the reader and to make the readers understand that these are everyday problems that most people encounter.

For the zine I will be creating I am going to want to inform and entertain my readers. I will be creating a zine about the steps to get to my dream career. While this will be about me and my life I look to add facts about the different steps I will need to take. I also thing I will be using some online attributes and printing techniques in my zine as well as bright colors.

  1. When I first looked at the zine you choose, the cover did not seem to give me ,”mental health”. After taking a look inside , I realized , this relates strongly to a college student. On the outside , everything looks okay , but on the inside there are major issues that are being hidden.
I agree this zine is very creative , not just the artwork , but the ability to capture and address the issues , many of us battle in everyday life is remarkable, to say the least. I love how you sated , “Zines can be as creative as you want them to be.”, meaning that a person/author does not have to be creative at all , as long as they capture a meaning or explanation about what they are passionate ,or want to spread awareness about. Drawing the reader into something that they are not familiar with , or something they battle with everyday, like mental health is remarkable. This makes people understand that they are not alone , and everyone has silent battles. The author captured the scenarios many teenagers and college students battle daily.
I completely agree , I think this zine was produced online, the imaging is digital, but I think many of the images were drawn and uploaded , or maybe color filled , using an online software , like “Procreate”.
The author captured so much in such a small zine , and I truly believe you can do the same on your career zine.

  2. I enjoyed the zine you chose as it pertained to the very important topic of mental health. I found it interesting how the author chose to start the zine by addressing their mental health as a day they dread. Many people suffer with mental health and from my own personal experience I knew just how the author felt when describing those days.

I did however find it interesting that you said, “Your involvement and passion will shine through your zine and affect the reader more than the colors you choose on the pages.” That seemed odd to me as an artist knows how much a color palette can change a piece of work. Also, if you notice in the zine, specifically page four, the author conveys their idea behind showing bad days by showing the unplugged lamp with a face that was asleep. As well as the spider webs in the dark, depressing, and messy room that represents chaos and sadness versus the outside world through the window which represents a beautiful day where everybody else is happy. These small details showed just how the author felt and gave a truly in depth look at what a bad day really felt like.

This zine gave a lot of representation as to how to show words and emotions through the use of pictures. I am interested in how you will incorporate this into your zine. I am also interested to see what ideas and techniques you will use from what we have learned in class to create your own zine. I am very excited to find out what your dream career is and what steps it will take to get there. It excites me to see what techniques and topics everyone will be showcasing as I can already note differences in our zines as yours sounds as though it will be more serious and mine shall be more so comical and silly.

  3. I really enjoyed the zine you put because I found it very entertaining and creative. I loved that the artist kept the same color scheme throughout and used characters rather than normal people. I felt that was a very unique approach. I could tell that the zine was created by someone who is passionate about mental health and relates to the issues he or she wrote about. As someone who also struggles with mental health, I found it very relatable. The author spoke of mental health as a normal issue that people encounter and the ways many people with mental illnesses feel and act. Like you said, I do believe that the real trick to making a zine is to write about something that you are passionate about. A reader is able to tell the difference with the detail.
I love all of the zines that people are able to digitally create. I find them so organized and artistically pleasing. I would really like to be able to digitally produce my zine; however, I am afraid that I am not quite artistic enough. My plan is to attempt it. Due to the fact that I lack the ability to draw, I will be using real, personal pictures. I plan to do my zine on barrel racing which is something that I feel very passionate about. I believe it will be easy for me to write about this topic since it is an activity that I love and have a lot of experience with. I would love to educate others on the topic as well.
Doing your zine on the career path you want to follow is going to be great. I know how passionate you are about your dreams, so am very excited to read your zine and learn more once it is complete.
