Blog Post 7

After reading Chapter 7, “Reading and Writing in the Humanities,” I realized how different writing in this field really is. It’s not just about giving information or following a strict formula ,it is about connecting ideas in a meaningful way. The structure still matters, but it feels more natural and flexible. Instead of sticking to a set pattern, the writing builds on thoughts and emotions, helping readers understand why something matters, not just what it means. I like that humanities writing lets you explore ideas and think deeply rather than just presenting facts.

The language in humanities writing also stood out to me. It’s expressive, emotional, and sounds more in depth. Writers use tone, imagery, and reflection to pull you in and make you feel connected to their ideas. In the student sample paper, I noticed how the writer’s voice came through; it didn’t sound stiff or too formal. It was thoughtful but still human, and that made it easier to follow and connect to. It reminded me that strong writing doesn’t have to sound robotic to sound intelligent.

When it comes to references, I really liked how they were used to support ideas rather than being self explanatory. It felt like the writer was joining a bigger conversation instead of depending on other people’s words to sound credible. That made the writing feel more natural.

What I still find hard is figuring out how much of my own opinion to include. I love that humanities writing gives space for your voice, but it’s hard to know where to draw the line between personal and analytical. Still, that’s what makes it so interesting, t pushes you to think for yourself and write with depth and meaning. I think that’s something I want to keep working on, finding that balance between being relatable and being academic, because that’s where the best writing really exists.

  1. Angel,
I agree with you. The humanities are quite diverse compared to the writing styles. The humanities come with many guidelines that are important to follow. The humanities writing is essential because it helps the reader understand the importance of an idea. Although this type of writing has many rules to follow, there is still room for the writers to explore new topic and research them. I think the humanities writing is more interesting to read because it feels as if you are in the author with the use of imagery. I also like the way this writing style uses its references; it makes the humanities unique. It is difficult to decide when it’s time to stop putting your personal opinion into the humanities righting. Even though finding balance in the humanities is hard it is important to include a good portion of both, so the reader can understand the main point.

  2. Dear writer,
I can agree that this chapter helped me comprehend that the writing in this field is way different than what I am used to. To add on to what you mentioned about the way the structure feels, I feel that writing in the humanities is not just expressing complex ideas but also makes readers use critical thinking to understand what the author is saying. I am more used to writing in the social sciences which typically requires more quantitative data due to it being more research. I agree with you and also like that humanities can let the author feel more relaxed and able to explore their topic instead of having to showcase research data.
The way the author speaks to the reader is also something we can agree on. As I said before, I am more used to writing in social science where the author uses a more indifferent or formal tone since they are usually just presenting information. Writing in the humanities could help one learn how to write more emotion-based by what you are saying. I agree with you once more in how the author uses many different details to connect the reader to what is being written.
Drawing the line between giving your opinion versus data that has been collected but not proven can be hard. To make sure you do not just have the whole thing be about you and your opinion, you could use research and facts to back your opinion up so it does not seem as if it is just an opinion but a popular belief. Although, make sure you do not do this to every opinion you have that gets included. The best writing is a writing that balances both your opinion and facts is something I can agree with you on.
    Sincerely, Nina
