Who Will I Be in Four Years?

Dear future self,

As of right now I reside at Longwood University as a freshman. Although this experience is expensive, think of it as the next step to your goal. I haven’t joined any clubs or organizations yet, but this is just a stepping stone. I hope that you eventually find a place here on campus. I haven’t done anything yet, but what exactly do you plan to achieve?

In the next four years, I see myself  being very active on campus. I want to join clubs and organizations that represent/support wellness. I definitely want to be apart of the National Honor Society of Psychology.  Including, being a chairperson for the society. One of my biggest goals, is to work with service dogs. Within next four years, I should be training puppies to be service dogs. One of my top five goals, would be making the dean’s list. I foresee myself branching out more with my peers, especially networking with mentors during internships. Using my future networking skills, I will utilize my resources to be as successful as possible. Essentially, I will have found ways to properly maintain my peace. As far as morally, I hope that I am still following all my standards for myself. Most importantly, I hope that by now I’ve found a balance that works tremendously for me.

Overall Angel, I just want you to continue to be you. Yes, this is a different ball park, but knowing you, you’ll figure it out. This is just another experience that will be eventful, but leave a meaningful mark on your journey. Knowing you, just the idea of “adulting” sends you somewhere, but by now, you should definitely have adjusted to it. Continue to blossom, be outgoing, and allow God to order your steps as always.

Sincerely,

Freshman Angel

  1. Dear Angel,

Thank you for writing this great piece, and for sharing the start of your journey with us. It’s ok that you haven’t found any clubs yet. Sometimes patience is the key to getting to where you need to be. You are already considering Longwood as a stepping stone which a good thought to have. You wanting to be very involved on campus just adds to your character.
Thinking about being a honors society member this early on is very impressive. It shows your dedication to your academics. Working with service dogs is also adding on to character as someone who genuinely wants to help people. You wanting to branch out and get connections is a very forward thinking. As you said you should also follow your standards and standing up for what you believe in. Achieving a good work balance is very difficult but with your dedication I believe that you can do it. Telling your future self to “continue to be you” show that you not only have respect for other things but for yourself as well. This shows that you are maturing fast but don’t forget to have fun along the way because being an adult kinda sucks. if I could give you any advice it would be to not grow up too fast. While it is good to be thinking ahead so much. It is also very important to live in the moment and to remember the past. People don’t like to think in the past but you can never learn if you don’t make mistakes. Your mistakes are what make you the person that you are today. Just remember that God loves you and your mistakes. Stay on track and I promise you that you will go far. Just remember where you come from and the people that helped you along the way because they are the ones that shaped you into the successful person you want to be. Always remember that God loves you.

    With excitement,
    Cody

  2. Dear Angel,

After reading your letter, I can tell that you have a lot of goals for yourself and it’s very nice to see how you want yourself to be involved. I can tell you’re very ambitious and that you are destined for success with your attitude. You wrote about wanting to join clubs that represent/support wellness and I know there are many clubs that do just that! You also mentioned that you want to be the chairperson for the National Honor Society of Psychology which is very admirable that you know that you want to do that as a freshman. Speaking about working with service dogs, I think there is an organization that helps work with them at Longwood. Using the resources around you to be successful is an amazing plan to make sure you understand all the material and to help with papers you have to write. You should continue to be yourself as that’s the best way to make friends and to find out who you grow into as you continue your journey here at Longwood. I know being a freshman in a new place is hard but I am certain you’ll find out how to, like you put it, ‘adult’ and adjust to these new experiences and people. I hope you find everything you’re looking for here and that you achieve all your goals!

    Sincerely,
    Nina
