Blog Post 10

This semester, I’ve grown a lot as a writer, I feel like more than I expected. At the beginning, I often second-guessed my ideas or worried about whether my writing “sounded right.” Over time, though, I learned how to trust my own voice. I’ve become more confident in my ability to organize my thoughts, explain complex ideas clearly, and revise my work with intention instead of frustration. I feel like I no longer write just to finish an assignment; I write to communicate something meaningful. My confidence has grown because I now understand that writing is a process, not something that has to come out perfect the first time. Getting more comfortable with brainstorming, outlining, and rewriting made me less afraid to take risks in my writing. I’ve also learned how to support my ideas with evidence and how to shape my writing for different audiences, which gave me a stronger sense of control and purpose in every piece I create. Moving forward, these skills will stick with me. Whether I’m writing essays for other classes, preparing research papers, or communicating professionally, I’ll use what I’ve learned about clarity, structure, and revision. I’m much better at recognizing what type of writing a situation calls for and adjusting my tone, organization, and style to fit. Learning that every discipline has its own writing expectations, its own structure, language, and reference style has also changed how I see writing in college. Instead of assuming that one type of writing works everywhere, I now think more critically about what each professor or field values. This will help me succeed across different classes because I know how to shift between analytical writing, scientific explanation, reflective writing, and more. It makes me more adaptable and aware of the conventions that shape academic communication. Looking into the future, I see this knowledge helping me in my career as well. Almost every job requires clear communication, and being able to adjust my writing for different audience will make me a more effective communicator. Overall, the growth I’ve experienced this semester is something I’ll carry with me well beyond this class.

Zine blog post 9

The topic of my zine is baseball. Baseball has always been a passion of mine and it’s a game that I find very interesting. I have been playing baseball since I was in the 6th grade and I’m currently playing for the club team here at Longwood. I gathered most of the information for my zine from my own personal knowledge of the game. Most of it is about the fundamentals of each position on the field and the game in general. The cover of my zine was hand drawn and I had to restart about fifteen times before I thought it was good enough. I am not an artist by any means, so I’m actually surprised at how it turned out.

My zine is split up by the positions on the field catcher, pitcher, 1st base, 2nd base, short stop, 3rd base, left field, center field, and right field. I have played a majority of these positions throughout my time of playing baseball and have a good idea of the roles of each of them. I did have to look up a few of them as the depth of the roles is much deeper than it may seem.

When it came to making the cover, I had used roughly fifteen pieces of paper while working on the sketch. Once I had one that I felt was a good enough drawing I had traced it onto the paper. For the letters I had to look up how to write in bubble letters and tried to get the spacing between each letter as even as possible. The cover is not complete yet and I will probably add some color and maybe trace over everything with a marker or pen.  The process of creating this cover and the zine in general has been a fun experience and I hope that mine will give someone more knowledge on the sport

Extra Credit Blog Post: Your First Semester at Longwood

We have done a lot of reflecting this semester, but I firmly believe that when done correctly, reflecting can help you understand where things went wrong and help you correct things moving forward.

So take some time and reflect on your first semester here at Longwood. Nothing ever goes 100% perfect, ever, so think about what went really well for you this semester as well as things that did not:

  1. What went GREAT and why
  2. What went BAD and why
  3. What can you do to change things moving forward

That last question is what most people fail to consider when they write reflections. Go back and look at your own reflections from this semester. Many failed to address “what they would do differently in hind sight. So do not forget to address this. Here is the final part of this: if you do NOT want me to publish the post, at the bottom write DO NOT POST and I will respect your wishes.

Blog 10 AND Respondent Blog 10: What have you learned?

READ CAREFULLY:

For this blog post as well as response post, we will return to having ALL groups respond to the same prompt. Feel free to keep the due dates as listed.

Reflect on how you feel you’ve grown this semester as a writer. How has your confidence grown over the semester? How will you you use your growing skills moving forward? Now that you are aware that each discipline has not only different modes of writing but also differences in things like structure, language, and reference, how will this knowledge help you throughout your college career? How do you see this knowledge helping you moving into your career?

This is an opportunity to do some reflective writing prior to the final, so please take your time and write thoughtfully for this blog post.

Starting our Zines

My topic for my zine is cheerleading! I am going to talk about the history of cheerleading, when it was started, and how it evolved into the sport we know today. I am also going to talk about the different types of cheer because not many people know that there are different types of cheerleading. Another one of my topics is that there are different divisions. There are different types of divisions because everyone and every school has a different skill level. I am also going to do what a practice looks like. Not many people know how much work we put into it when it comes to games, and we show our skills. I will also discuss what a typical week of cheer looks like and how many hours of cheer I participate in. One of my topics will be what a gameday looks like. I will also discuss what a competition entails. Lastly, I am going to discuss why cheer is considered a sport, as many people believe it is not. It is a sport because everyone practices, we compete, and we cheer at games. If cheer wasn’t a sport, we wouldn’t cheer at games and practices as much as we do. Also, just like how soccer has a USA team, cheer has a USA team. It is a pretty good team, and they have won back-to-back championships multiple times. I will research the topic and look into the history of cheerleading. I didn’t really take any steps; I just knew that I had also been passionate about cheerleading because it is what I love doing most, and I am always involved in cheer, no matter what. I didn’t do cheer my whole life, but I did do it when I was in elementary school, and when I went to high school, I knew I wanted to enjoy my 4 years og high school and not let it go to waste becuse in middle school, I had no time to do school activities because I had gymnastics.

Zine creation

Dear Reader,

Today I will talk about my zine and why I chose my topic. My topic for my zine is The life of sign language and it wonders. I going to talk about how sign language became a language and when, how people can be deaf either by being born that way or illness as a baby or the mother being sick while pregnant with the child or later in life slowly losing you hearing becoming deaf or hard of hearing  and other possibly that can cause someone to be deaf. There are things no one thinks about why that person is deaf. Long ago they used to say if a person was deaf, blind or hard of hearing it was because their parent sinned or they sinned to become this way and you should stay away from them because they was bad luck to be around and whoever was deaf or blind they care not faith christian because they sinned against god and god is punishing them by making them this way. But I think it funny how people long ago would say this but go make the blind see and the deaf hear again so why would he “ punish them” by making them either not hear or can not see. Then people later learned that it can be genetic and god has no control over what people are born with. With people being deaf i have seen myself that they have a stronger eye sight that people who can hear because with them not having their hearing there eye are stronger to make up for the loss of hearing. The steps I did creating my cover was something I knew would relate to the deaf community and that is one of the centers of the deaf community and is important to them.

Blog Post 9

For my Zine, I decided to focus on guinea pigs, mostly because people really don’t understand how much goes into taking care of them. Everyone acts like they are super easy pets, but they actually need a lot of attention, the right setup, and daily care. There is so much misinformation out there, so I wanted my Zine to be more on the informational side, something that teaches people the things they actually need to know before getting a guinea pig, and how to take care of one the right way.

Since I already have my own guinea pig, I’m not starting from the bottom. I know their little sounds, their personalities, and how dramatic they can be when they want food. I know how easily they get stressed, what veggies they like, and how important it is to pay attention to their behavior. But for my Zine, I want to make sure everything is accurate, not just based on what I’ve learned from experience. So I’m planning to use information from small animal vets and animal organizations, especially about things like proper diet, cage size, safe vs. unsafe foods, and everything people don’t think about until they already have one.

For my cover, I wanted it to be cute but still make it obvious that it has real information inside. I started by doodling a few ideas in my notes, playing around with different titles and little guinea pig drawings. Then I sketched a draft that felt simple, kind of matching the vibe guinea pigs give off. After that, I made my draft cover using the colors I liked.

Making the cover actually helped me lock in the whole vision for the Zine. Now that I can see it, I feel more excited and clear about what I want to include.

Blog #8

I feel as though this semester has gone by extremely fast, the days flew by and I had a lot of fun experiencing this new college. Though we are not fully finished with the semester, I am ready for it to be over and I feel prepared enough to do all of my finals. I definitely see myself lining up with Sarah’s experiences as she had a very fulfilling time in college and all of the events were unique in a way showing that not everyone views college the same. I am a sophomore and I transferred here from a different university, therefore I am new to this campus and the classrooms. After being here for almost a full semester I realized how much I appreciated the change and how I am so excited for the semester coming up. I fear I will face problems surrounding my class subjects and how I might be overloaded with work. This worries me, especially since I am not only taking English classes which are my strong suit and am instead taking archeology classes and math classes. I will definitely be thinking about spring break and how excited I will be to go home again and see my family. My family is extremely bad at planning trips and events so we do not have anything set and stone yet, but I feel like with some convincing I can get them to go somewhere other than our hometown for a getaway. I plan on working a lot during summer and spring break which might deviate from any plans. It would still be nice to brainstorm some ideas and see if they would be possibilities. I hope to find some internships here at Longwood later on, possibly even this summer coming up. Overall, my mind is ready to be done learning for this semester and have a total reset so that I am able to do my best work for the semester coming up. I feel that with the time we have left I am going to be able to achieve great final scores on all finals and relax for a good amount of time with no worry about school.

Planning For The Future.

Wow! This semester has really flown by. It feels like yesterday was August 2nd and I was moving in. Now it is November and I just had my first basketball game. The time has already flown by and the days go by insanely fast. Before I know it, it’s going to be next semester and soon after that I’ll have finished my first year of college. When looking towards next semester I’m hoping I can do a better job at studying. Even though we are reaching the end of the semester I still don’t think I know what study habits work best for me or that my time management skills have improved. I know in this upcoming semester I’m facing a more challenging workload, which is crazy to me because this semester was already quite difficult. Being in the harder Spanish class I spend a lot of my time trying to do most of my homework in Spanish and then translating it to English. Also being a nursing major , next semester I’m going to be taking both anatomy 207 and nursing 101 which are both classes towards my major and students tend to find them quite difficult. I’m still hoping that by the end of the year my study habits will improve. As someone who has a hard time focusing for more than like twenty minutes at a time, studying is just not something that works for me. Even though I do look forward to spring break, I more than likely won’t be able to go home. After winter break I will most likely not be going home till the end of April, maybe even May. With basketball season being in full swing and competition cheer my next semester is going to be even crazier than this. This summer I will be taking another math class so I can stay on track with my major. I’m hoping it will not be too difficult as I plan to work a ton this summer. But hopefully I am still able to get a little break from school and just have time to relax.
